Grape and Raisin Toxicity
Many people love to give their pets fruit for a treat. While most fruit is okay, it is inadvisable to feed your pet raisins or grapes. Toxicity from either fruit can cause an animal to develop kidney failure.
It would take approximately 50 grams of raisins and 225 grams of grapes to be toxic to a 25# dog. Why raisins and grapes cause renal failure is unknown.
Dogs usually start vomiting and having diarrhea within 24 hours of ingesting the fruit. Anorexia, abdominal pain, and dehydration follow. The kidneys begin to fail within days.
The patient should have vomiting induced within 4 hours of ingestion. If longer than 4 hours have lapsed, the patient should be hospitalized and given aggressive IV fluids and activated charcoal for several days. The kidney function needs to be monitored very closely for the first 72 hours after ingestion.
