Giardia

Giardia is a protozoan parasite that can infect the intestines of dogs and cats. This parasite is very contagious and is commonly seen in kennel or shelter situations.

Animals will ingest the microscopic cysts of the parasite in feces, food, or water.

Many animals are not symptomatic and the parasite is found on a routine fecal examination. Those pets are usually carriers and clinical signs can become apparent when the patient is stressed. Liquid diarrhea with a very foul odor is common.

Most patients respond well to Metronidazole or Fenbendazole. Some patients require a second round of treatment to completely eradicate the parasite.
