Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency
This condition occurs when the pancreas fails to manufacture the enzymes responsible for normal digestion. This will cause significant malnutrition. German Shepherds are predisposed to develop this condition, but it can occur in any breed. Cats can also have EPI, but it is rare.
Chronic pancreatitis can predispose a pet to develop EPI-this is most common in cats. Dogs have an unknown cause where the pancreas atrophies and stops producing enzymes.
These pets usually suffer with chronic diarrhea that can appear oily. Weight loss is inevitable since they are unable to digest any nutrients. Some patients have a voracious appetite along with abundant flatulence. If the pet is having increased drinking and urinating, diabetes may also be present.
There is enzyme replacement available and most patients do very well. It comes in powder form and is added to the pet’s food at every meal. Once the patient is gaining weight and having normal stool, the medication can be reduced. However, the patient will likely need life-long supplementation every day at every meal.
