Esophagitis

Esophagitis

This by definition is inflammation of the esophagus. The disease can range from mild irritation to severe ulcers.

Anything that is caustic to the sensitive lining of the esophagus can cause inflammation. Gastric reflux of stomach acid into the esophagus or ingestion of a chemical are common causes. Cats are notorious for holding medication in their esophagus instead of swallowing. Any disease that causes chronic vomiting will predispose an animal to develop esophagitis.

Most animals will drool excessively and may have a decreased appetite. Others will cry out or extend their neck when swallowing. If the condition is allowed to progress without treatment, weight loss will follow.

Protectants to coat the esophagus and allow it to heal are prescribed. If the patient has gastric reflux, medication such as Tagamet or Zantac is used. In severe cases of esophagitis, food may need to be withheld and a stomach tube placed for nourishment.  In all cases, a soft diet is preferred over dry.Always follow any oral medication given to your pet with a bolus of water to avoid this condition. It should be noted that some patients with severe esophagitis may form strictures of the esophagus or develop aspiration pneumonia. Contact your vet immediately if your pet worsens or develops a cough or fever.
