Epulis
This term is used to describe tumors of the periodontal tissue (gums) of dogs. These tumors can cause damage locally and none of them ever metastasize. Boxers are known to have abundant epulis formation.
There are currently no known causes or risk factors.
Owners are usually unaware their pet have epulis as there are no clinical signs. In some cases, dogs will have bad breath, drool, or have blood-tinged saliva.
Even though there is no threat to the tumors spreading past the oral cavity, surgical incision is always indicated. Some forms of epulis are highly aggressive to surrounding bone and tissue and need to be removed. This can usually be done during a routine dental cleaning.
