Ectropion
This condition is defined by the rolling out of the lower eyelid. The conjunctiva and cornea are overexposed and predispose the eye to trauma. Some breeds are more likely to develop ectropion such as bloodhounds and St. Bernards.
The cause is usually due to breed conformation. In rare cases, weight loss around the head or trauma can cause ectropion.
The signs are quite obvious and include eye discharge and the exposure of the lower conjunctiva.
Surgical correction is warranted in severe cases. In other cases, keeping the eye lubricated with antibiotic ophthalmic ointment is usually all that is needed. It is important to monitor the eye closely for dryness, as this will predispose the pet to develop corneal ulcers.
