Submissive or Excitement Urination

Submissive or Excitement Urination

These two conditions are more common in younger animals and tend to disappear as the pet ages. As their names imply, the pet will urinate in response to showing submission or excitement. These pets should never be punished in any form- that will likely worsen the problem.

This most commonly occurs when the owner comes home or when there are guests. It is best to either not greet the pet at all for several minutes, or to greet them in a non-excitable, non-threatening matter: lower pitch voice, kneeling down, patting pet on underside. It is best not to use a high pitched voice, tower over the
pet, or pat the dog on the head.

If your pet is over 1 year of age, and the above tactics are not helping, talk to your veterinarian about a medication that can help improve urine leakage.
