Cat Scratch Disease
OVERVIEW:
Cat Scratch Disease is the lay term for Bartonellosis. This bacteria is transmitted to cats through fleas and ticks. This disease is significant because it causes humans to become ill, sometimes severely, if they are scratched or bitten by an affected animal.
CAUSES:
As noted above, this syndrome is caused by a gram-negative bacteria that resides in fleas and ticks. When the pet is bitten, the bacteria can be transmitted to them.
SYMPTOMS:
Unfortunately, cats usually show no signs of illness. Humans will form a papule at the site of the bite or scratch, then enlarged lymph nodes within 3-10 days. They can run a fever, be lethargic, have muscle pain, and no appetite.
TREATMENT:
The way this organism is transmitted from cats to humans is unknown. Immunocompromised people should avoid kittens, as it seems more common in younger cats. Cats can be tested for the bacteria to assess if they are carriers. Always clean all cat scratches and bites thoroughly. This disease rarely requires treatment.
