Boxer Cardiomyopathy

Boxer Cardiomyopathy

Overview:

This cardiac disease appears to only affect Boxers, usually at least 2 years of age. It is believed to be genetic, though a specific gene can not be isolated. These dogs have arrhythmias that can cause sudden death.

Causes:

As stated above, there appears to be a genetic link in certain Boxer lineages.

Symptoms:

Some dogs are asymptomatic and the arrhythmia is noted on a routine ECG. Some patients will have fainting episodes. Signs of heart failure (coughing, increased heart rate, exercise intolerance) are uncommon in this syndrome.

Treatment:

This disease is extremely hard to manage, and some patients still die suddenly while on medication. Anti-arrhythmics are usually prescribed, however, some patients appear to get worse with treatment.  It is recommended that these patients have ECGs regularly and have Holter monitoring performed.
