Asthma
Overview:
This is primarily a problem in cats caused by airway inflammation similar to humans. The triggers of inflammation are largely unknown. Common in Siamese cats.
Causes:
As noted above, the cause of asthma is unknown, but cigarette smoke, dusty cat litter, perfumes, air fresheners, and hair sprays have been known to exacerbate the symptoms.
Symptoms:
80% of cats will cough, 60% will sneeze, and 40% will audibly wheeze. Some cats will open mouth breathe during an acute crisis. It is sometimes difficult to determine if the cat is coughing or trying to expel a hair ball.
Treatment:
All known triggers above should be avoided. Asthmatic cats should be allowed to stay indoors, unless the triggers above are unavoidable. Cats in an acute crisis will need oxygen, injectable steroids, and bronchodilators. Long-term management involves oral steroids and bronchodilators. Newer treatment includes inhaled steroids (Flovent) if the cat will tolerate.
