Abscess
Overview:
An abscess is a collection of purulent material (pus) contained within a cavity, usually under the skin, but can develop anywhere in the body.
Causes: The most common cause of an abscess is a dog or cat bite, but can be caused by any penetrating object. Internal organs can also develop abscesses, usually from bacteria in the bloodstream.
Symptoms:
Fever is very common, with malaise, lethargy, and anorexia. In skin abscesses, a swelling is usually observed, sometimes with purulent discharge on the pet’s hair. In cases of internal abscesses, the symptoms depend on the organ affected.
Treatment:
A skin abscess will be lanced and flushed with a antimicrobial solution, sometimes under anesthesia. Antibiotics are prescribed. Internal abscesses are more serious and can require surgical removal or hospitalization. Cats that have recurrent abscesses should be tested for Leukemia and FIV
